Significant Emotional Statements (SES) are the third category of Recovery Components, following Apologies and Forgiveness. SES are those important emotional statements that do not easily fall into the other two categories.

Often SES are positive things like, “I love you. I appreciate you. Thank you for….  I was proud of you when….” These positive SES can stand alone.

If an SES is emotionally negative, such as “You were a horrible father,” “I never respected you,” or “It hurt me so much when…”  they must be paired with either an apology, a forgiveness, or both, to fully address the emotional energy around that statement and bring it to completion.
