After experiencing several significant losses, the death of a baby son led John W. James to create the Grief Recovery Method in the early 1980s.

Not finding anything truly helpful with his own grief, John set out to answer the question, “What do I wish had been there for me?”  The GRM was born and has since been maintained with very few modifications. The “Method” began as a 12-week program, delivered in person by trained GRM Specialists to provide grievers with the information and tools needed to help one recover from significant losses.

The Grief Recovery Handbook is available worldwide and published in over 20 languages. Over one million copies of the Grief Recovery Handbook have been sold. Thousands of Grief Recovery Method Specialists are trained to deliver the program worldwide in various languages. Today, the GRM program is conducted over 8-weeks in the group setting or seven sessions if completed one-on-one with a GRMS.
